Welgeleë Boutique Wine Estate is not one of those age old wine estate stories. No - quite the opposite.

This 30 Ha farm is the laborious effort of its visionary proprietors, Chris and Lidea Meyer. After setting sail (literally) on their yacht to cross all the oceans, these two had lots of time for reflection, and after yet one of many rough nights at sea, they dawned on the idea of settling on a wine estate, as both have a passion for farming, a need to succeed and a unsurpassed love for their country.

They searched high and low, went all over the country and one very fortunate day, came across Welgeleë.

From the moment that these two set foot on the very fertile soil – they lost their hearts on this aptly named farm (Well positioned). The romantic sunsets and excellent terroir soon had the two in love with what they saw and after taking over the farm in May 1998, they went back to the corporate world to support their new “work of art in progress”.

From the beginning it was an absolute labor of love, and still is, as these two believe that making wine is something that should be seen as an art form, and that when planting their vines, each one of the plants should be nurtured and cared for as one would your children.

They spent, and still do spend hours in the vineyards come harvest time and are kept very busy with the newly build Wedding Venue.

Their two children, son Logan, a born farmer and daughter Lilly, a Biomedical Technologist both share their parent’s vision for Welgeleë. Being well groomed, kind hearted kids, and experienced in their fields, they bring a good balance to the farm and their regular input are taken with keen interest by their parents.

Logan now married to Kristie expecting the families first grand child which will be spoilt rotten by Chris and Lidea who is so looking forward to the new member of the family

Lilly and boyfriend Shaun are persuing their careers in the city during the week adds big value to the farm with their contributions when needed.

Both children and partners are firmly grounded and have a mind of their own, but when it comes to Welgeleë, they all stand together like one and all assist where they can.

When it comes to the viticulture side, Chris is hands on in the 3 Ha Shiraz vineyards with his “bouspan” (building team). Together they pamper and conserve the plants to give only the best quality yield. During harvest time, Lidea is the “inspector”; she takes great pride that she lets only the "top of the crop" berries enter the cellar, thus assisting Chris with making the best wine possible!
